Emmanuel College is actively preparing for an on-campus residential and academic experience for the Fall 2020 semester. Our plan is to provide a superb educational experience this fall while maintaining the health and well-being of all members of our College community.

The fall semester will be unlike any in the 100-plus years in Emmanuel’s history. While we look forward to students once again living and learning on our Boston campus, we approach this semester with new expectations. In these unprecedented and unpredictable times, we remain ready to adjust our plans as conditions evolve. Above all, we are prepared to take any necessary measures to safeguard the health of students, faculty, staff, and the wider public.

Academics: Flexible Ways to Engage

As part of our effort to de-densify learning and living spaces, classes will employ both face-to-face/hybrid and 100% virtual learning modalities. To better protect community health, we have also revised the Fall Academic Calendar, which includes an earlier-than-usual start date for classes: Wednesday, August 26th. Prior to Thanksgiving Break, all resident students will return to their homes and all classes and exams will be virtual for the remainder of the semester. Spring 2021 classes will resume as scheduled on Tuesday, January 19, 2021.

Residential Living

The residence hall experience will be different this fall, as we honor our commitments to keep ourselves and one another healthy and well. Amid these new expectations, students living in residence halls will continue to be in an environment that fosters enduring friendships. The deadline for housing intentions has been extended  to Friday, July 17th at midnight.

Based on an earlier start to the semester on Wednesday, August 26th, move-in will take place in a staggered fashion from August 18th-23rd to allow for proper social distancing. Move-in days will be pre-assigned. Students will be permitted to bring only one person to assist with their move-in process.

Maintaining a Safe and Healthy Campus Environment

A key prerequisite for repopulating the campus is COVID-19 testing. We are pleased to be working with the Broad Institute, an internationally respected biomedical research center, to coordinate this vital component of our reopening plan.

Testing is one element of our comprehensive strategy for preventing and containing the spread of COVID-19 on campus. This plan includes detailed protocols for social distancing, visits and gatherings, symptom monitoring, the use of face-coverings and personal protective equipment, classroom configurations, cleaning, and quarantining and isolation. Detailed instructions on these and other measures necessary for the health of our campus community will be communicated in the coming weeks.
